Internal Frame Backpacks - their uses
Different kinds of backpacks are good for different kinds of activities. No matter what you’re using it for, an internal frame backpack will most likely be your best choice.
The frame is built into a cloth section and fits closely to the body for better control. Made of metal or plastic, the frame usually has several straps attached to it for better distribution of weight.
Benefits of an internal frame backpack over the external frame variety include smaller chances of getting the packs caught on something. With the frame on the outside, things are more likely to catch on it. This can throw you off balance and cause injuries, especially if hiking, skiing, rock climbing, or adventuring through the wilderness.
An internal frame backpack has a large storage compartment with few smaller pockets on the outside. There is potential for attaching additional items on the outside but the space for this is limited. These packs are great for camping or ski trips since they provide the support and weight distribution vital to carrying large heavy loads.
Carrying a backpack around that doesn’t fit or moves a lot makes for a disappointing, and sometimes painful trip. Your shoulders should bear most of the weight, saving your back from unnecessary pain, discomfort, and stress. This means that finding a backpack to fit your particular body size is important. Comfort and safety should be your first concerns.
Your torso length, and waist belt size determine your backpack size. Measure your torso from the base of your neck, down your spine to the top of your hipbones. This determines you’re the frame size of your pack. Next, you need to consider what kind of harness you should use. Because women and men are built differently, there are different options for harnesses. Women’s harnesses are usually more rounded to fit around the chest area, and have a slimmer strap.
Now, adjust the straps on your backpack to bring the frame up, matching its length to your torso length. Shrug your shoulders while you tighten your waist belt. The top edge of the belt should be about an inch above your hipbone. The waist belt should be flush against the body. The harness should fit snuggly and perfectly against your shoulders with no gaps.
You could just buy any backpack you see, whether it has an internal frame or external frame, and pay no attention to how it fits you. If you do this though, you are going to have pain, and your trip will be less enjoyable. Hiking, camping, or whatever activity you choose is easier and more fun with an internal frame backpack that fits properly.
